Like other programs offered in different colleges, NYS courses and requirements are governed by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) requirements. The following are the requirements for various classes.

1. Diploma courses: KCSE grade C- (minus) and above
2. Certificate courses: KCSE grade D (plain) and above)
3. Artisan courses: KCSE grade D- (minus) and below

NYS paramilitary training is open to students with a KCSE D—(minus) and above. The institution offers free courses to recruited or enrolled students.
