Like other programs offered in other colleges, NYS courses and requirements are governed by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) requirements. The following are the requirements for various courses.

1. Diploma courses: KCSE grade C- (minus) and above
2. Certificate courses: KCSE grade D (plain) and above)
3. Artisan courses: KCSE grade D- (minus) and below

With a KCSE D- (minus) and above, you can also join the NYS paramilitary training. The institution offers free courses to recruited or enrolled students.
