Marketable courses in Kenya

Before I list some courses that may seem marketable in Kenya today, allow me to share with you some crucial information. For many young people, transitioning from high school to further or higher education marks a key turning point for their lives. The choices made at this particular point in life if done correctly can bring a lot of joy later in life. On the contrally, misinformed choices at this particular point can also bring life full of regrets later in life. One major decision at this point is career choice.

In a very simple definition, a career choice is a decision you make about what career or occupation you wish to pursue later in life. This decision is vital as it will influence how your life unfolds later on. There are some key considerations you need to consider throughout this endeavor. Some of them include;

1). Knowing yourself.

Do you know who you’re? Really are you aware of yourself? Not you’re your name! But the unique component that form your whole. What are your interests? What are your passions? What is your personality? These attributes will greatly influence your future career trajectory, so as you make a career choice, know yourself first, the question of what are marketable courses in Kenya will come next.

Let me give you a practical example why knowing yourself is important before you make a career choice, let’s assume (for a moment) that you are an introvert (a person who prefers to spend time alone), and then someone tells you the most marketable course in Kenya today is “sales and marketing”, and because you are looking for a marketable course to pursue, you heed to their “advice”. In the course of your training and work life, you will realize, working as a sales person or marketer, you need to have outgoing skills which may not be inherent to introvert(s).

This may make your work difficult especially when selling and marketing goods and services. At this point you may become dissatisfied by the job and start contemplating to change career. On the contrally, extroverts (people who naturally enjoy interacting with others) will find this career type fulfilling. Therefore before you make any career choice, take time and know yourself. After knowing yourself, the next step is to gather the options open to you.

2). what options are open to you in line with yourself?

There are so many careers out there, but not all of them you will find them fulfilling. Take time to explore them and find as much information as you can. What are admission requirements for these option(s)? Where can you study them? Where can you find work? These questions among others are very important. If you can, seek advice from professionals already in these fields.

3). Make a plan and a choice

If you know yourself, know your options, then you can plan and make a decision for your future career. If you are in primary or secondary school, you can start planning well for your academics in order to meet your future career study requirements.

So which courses are marketable in Kenya today?

Well, this is not an easy question to answer but with the above guidelines you can choose a career or course that can benefit you in future. What is marketable today may not be marketable tomorrow. My advice on this issue is this; before you commit yourself to any course whether perceived to be marketable or not, ask yourself this question and get a correct answer.

Question: If I pursue course X, and based on market dynamics, if I am not able to secure a formal job, will the skills I acquire through training in this course help me start my own business? If the skills are practical, then you can become an entrepreneur in line with your training. And nobody said after your post secondary education, you must be a job seeker. Instead, you can choose to disrupt the norm and become a job creator.

In summary, the following courses are “perceived” to be marketable

  1. Computer Science/ IT and related fields
  2. Medicine and allied fields
  3. Statistics & Math’s
  4. Architecture/ Construction and allied fields
  5. Sales & Marketing
  6. Energy, Oil and Gas
  7. Accounts/ Audit and allied fields
  8. Procurement/ supply chain and allied fields
