How much does HELB give for each band?

The university funding model has evolved significantly following the introduction of the new funding model, which comprises five bands. Band 1 is for families with a monthly income up to Sh5,995; Band 2 is for income up to Sh23,670; Band 3 is for income up to Sh70,000; Band 4 is for income up to Sh120,000; and Band 5 is for families with a monthly income above Sh120,000.

The amount HELB gives in each band depends on the level of need for different student categories. For instance, the following is the amount HELB gives different students.

Band 1: Scholarships comprise 70 percent, loans comprise 25 percent, and total government support is 95 percent. Parents contribute 5 percent, and the student receives a Sh60,000 upkeep loan.

Band 2: Scholarship comprises 60 percent, with a loan of 30 percent, putting total government support at 90 percent. The family will contribute 10 percent while the student will receive an upkeep loan of Sh55,000.

Band 3: The scholarship covers 50 percent and a loan of 30 percent; total support to students is 80 percent. The family will contribute 20 percent, while the student receives a Sh50,000 upkeep loan.

Band 4: Scholarships comprise 40 percent, with a loan of 30 percent, putting total government support at 70 percent. The family will cover 30 percent of the cost, while the student will receive a Sh45,000 upkeep loan.

Band 5: The scholarship covers 30 percent, and the loan 30 percent, making the total support 60 percent. The family will contribute 40 percent, while the student will receive an upkeep loan of Sh40,000.

How much does HELB give self-sponsored students?

Candidates seeking to study their studies in private universities as parallel or module two or self-sponsored students in public universities are eligible for loans only. Students are expected to apply for loans and scholarships through the available platforms for funding consideration. Those attending private universities can apply for loans only. The amount HELB gives is given per semester.

How much does HELB give Tvet students?

The total annual tuition fee for the students is Ksh. 67,189. This comprises the fees for all students undertaking courses such as artisan, craft certificate, and diploma programs. The amount each student gets depends on the level of need. For example, vulnerable students receive an 80% grant, which amounts to Ksh. 53,750 and a loan of Ksh. 13,439. Extremely needy students receive a Ksh grant. 47,032 and a loan of Ksh. 20,157 Needy students receive a Ksh grant. 33,595 and a loan of Ksh. 20,156, while less needy students receive a Ksh grant. 21,500 and a loan of Ksh. 32,251. Parents of needy and less needy students are required to contribute to Ksh. 13,438.
