Bachelor of Science in Physics

Course Overview.
Physics is concerned with nature and properties of matter and energy. Scientifically it is the study of the universe, from the very large star formation, cosmic microwave background radiation to the very small atomic cooling and trapping, nanotechnology, string theory and everything in between biophysics and the physics of solid state devices, just to name a few. It involves the study of the laws of nature how and why things behave as they do. Physics is fundamental discipline that provides the framework within which all other sciences and technologies are developed. As a profession physics encompasses all science, engineering and technology fields. Professionals in this field are known as physicists. Physicist studies the natural universe and tries to uncover why objects exist and behave as they do. As a Physicist, you could be involved in the development of various kinds of technology from communications and energy efficiency to space and satellites among others.

Bachelor of Science in Physics is a four year course that provides a broad and solid background in fundamental physics through introductory course work to a deep, broad and rigorous understanding of quantitative problems which is useful to many different careers in research, quality control, electronics, computers and engineering among other areas. Physics training will equip students with essential transferable skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking and analytical skills that are in demand across many sectors within government and private sectors. Students of the course can choose their specializations from among; Electronics, Theoretical, Nuclear physics, Geophysics or Astrophysics. With the rapid technological advancement, physics gives the graduates in this field their most important skill, which is mainly the ability to think clearly and rigorously about any technical problem which may arise in their field of specialization. Graduates will be equipped with fundamental knowledge of classical and modern physics as well as providing hands-on experience in experimental physics.

Entry Qualifications.
For self sponsored students, at least a mean grade of C+ in KCSE. For Government sponsored students, the minimum cut point which is announced annually applies. The students should in addition have good performance in the following cluster subjects; Subject 1 MAT A, Subject 2 PHY, Subject 3 CHE, Subject 4 BIO or any GROUP III or any GROUP IV or any GROUP V

Becoming a physicist.
If you are talented in maths and have an interest for scientific experiments and understanding how things work then a career in physics could be right for you. In addition you should be prepared to develop skills which can help you succeed in this field. Physicists have strong analytical skills to be able to think logically to carry out scientific experiments and studies. Physicists present their research at scientific conferences, to the public, or to government and business leaders they therefore must have good communication skills. Physicists must carefully evaluate their own work and the work of others and this requires Critical-thinking skills.

Physicists must always be curious as they work in fields that are always on the cutting edge of technology and must be very keen to learn continuously for their career, a curiosity in this field is therefore necessary. In their work physicists must collaborate extensively with others requiring them to have good interpersonal skills. These professionals perform complex calculations involving geometry, algebra, calculus and other areas of mathematics; they therefore must possess excellent maths skills. Physicists use scientific observation and analysis to solve complex scientific questions, good problem solving & creative thinking skills are therefore essential to solve these complex scientific problems. These professionals sometimes may spend a lot of time working alone and need to be able to stay motivated as well as accurate in their work.

Work environment.
Most physicists spend their time in offices. They also conduct research in laboratories

Career opportunities
Graduates of this course can work in diverse fields including; scientific research, universities and universities of technology, engineering, Manufacturers of materials, manufacturers of equipment, hospitals, mining companies, defence, finance, journalism, environmental monitoring, telecommunication, renewable energy, government, meteorology, oil and gas and space exploration industries among other industries or self-employment, with appropriate experience may act as a private consultant.
