Course Overview
Electrical engineering is a branch of engineering that encompasses the study and application of electronics, electromagnetism and electricity. Professionals in this field are known as electrical engineers. Electronic engineering on the other hand is a branch of engineering that makes use of non linear and active electrical components such as; semiconductor devices, diodes and integrated circuits to design electronic devices, systems and circuits. Professionals in this field are known as electronic engineers. Electrical engineers are involved in planning, design, development, testing as well as supervision of the manufacturing process of electrical equipments whereas electronics engineers are involved with the design and development of electronic equipments, they can work independently or as a team. Electrical and Electronic Engineering combined together therefore offers dual qualifications to students of this course to become either electrical engineers, electronic engineers or both.
The Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering is a five year course that has been developed to impact professional skills to students and enable them research, design and develop technologies in the field of Electrical & Electronics Engineering. It is aimed at developing competent manpower in the fields of electrical & electronics engineering by providing excellent training, teaching and research and thereby contribute to the development of the country’s electrical & electronics sectors. The curriculum is designed such that, during the first three years, the students undertake Mathematics, Basic electrical and electronic principles and general studies.
During their final two years, the students choose to specialize either in light current option or heavy current option. The students are expected to learn a systematic and analytic approach to electrical and electronic engineering to enable them to carry out design and research work. They are also expected to develop the right attitude toward the needs and aspirations of the society as well as a sense of responsibility. Upon successful completion of the course, graduates can find work both locally and regionally within; public and private sectors, universities and colleges, Non Governmental Organizations among others. Graduates of the course can also opt to start their own consultancy businesses.
Entry Requirement
For self sponsored students, at least a mean grade of B- in KCSE. For Government sponsored students, the minimum cut point which is announced annually applies. The students should in addition have good performance in the following cluster subjects; Subject 1 MAT A, Subject 2 PHY, Subject 3 CHE, Subject 4 BIO or any GROUP III or any GROUP IV or any GROUP V
Becoming an electrical cum electronic engineer
If you enjoy maths & physics and have an interest in electricity, electrical components or electronic circuits, then pursuing this course might interest you. In addition, you should be prepared to develop skills that can help you grow and succeed in this field.
Electrical cum electronic engineers are innovative people who are able to keep track of multiple design elements and technical characteristics when performing these tasks. They are also initiative and able to put their academic knowledge to new tasks in every project they undertake besides engaging in continuing education to keep up with changes in technology. These professionals also got have good interpersonal skills which enable them to work well with others during the design and manufacturing process to ensure that their plans are implemented correctly.
Electrical cum electronic engineers are very good in maths as they regularly use maths such as calculus and other advanced maths topic to analyze, design and troubleshoot equipment during their work process. These engineers are also good communicators able to explain their designs and reasoning clearly and to relay instructions during product development and production.
Work environment.
Electrical and electronic engineers work in office and spend considerable time at projects sites.
Career opportunities
Electronic and electrical engineers may find employment in industries such as electronics, IT, manufacturing, power, transport, construction and building services. Opportunities are also found in telecommunications, research and development, aviation sector and petrochemicals among other areas. Graduates can also start their own businesses.
