Bachelor of Science in Applied Computer Science

Course Overview.
Computer science is simply the scientific study of the principles and use of computers in modern age. A training in this field equips students with foundation in computer systems, hardware and software technologies. Through technology, we are living in an increasingly connected world where new challenges are presented every day. These challenges require people with the skills to realise the potential of existing technologies as well as exploiting the opportunities of new technologies, and to help organizations and businesses navigate through these challenges. Professionals trained to solve challenges in field may be referred to as computer specialists, hardware engineers, and software developers among many other titles. Depending on the position held, the work of computer specialists may vary as some of them may be involved in the development of new software technologies; others may work as data analysts, while still others may be involved in hardware and technology maintenance among other duties.

The Bachelor of Science in Applied Computer Science has been designed with a primary aim of providing students with general computer science courses required in other disciplines. Emphasis is put on software development and hardware design among other computer technologies and applications. Upon successful completion of the programme the graduates will be able to apply software engineering & hardware engineering tools effectively as well as have adequate skills, ability to design and implement suitable computer applications, both software and hardware and be able to advice on such applications. Graduates of the course can find employment in areas such as; Computer systems design and related services, Telecommunications, Finance and insurance, Educational services, Information technology, business among others. Graduates can also start their own businesses.

Entry Qualifications.
For self sponsored students, at least a mean grade of C+ in KCSE. For Government sponsored students, the minimum cut point which is announced annually applies. The students should in addition have good performance in the following cluster subjects; Subject 1 MAT A, Subject 2 PHY, Subject 3 2nd GROUP II or any GROUP III, Subject 4 a GROUP II or a GROUP III or any GROUP IV or any GROUP V.

In addition, you should be prepared to develop skills that can help you grow and succeed in this field.

Good communication skills are very important as these professionals work on teams and must be able to communicate with other types of professionals as well as with nontechnical team members. Technical skills are mandatory as professionals in this field must understand computer capabilities and languages in order to design effective software and hardware technologies.

Computer specialists work mostly work in offices.
