Bachelor of Arts (BA)

Course Overview
Bachelor of Arts degree encompasses degrees either awarded in liberal arts (academic subjects such as, philosophy, literature, etc), liberal studies (subjects such as social Sciences, humanities etc) or both. Depending on one specialization, professionals in this field may go by different titles such as; community development officers, political leaders, bankers, human rights activists, administrators, teachers, company executives, trade unionists, writers, university lecturers and Professors, among other titles.

The Bachelor of Arts is a four year course that has been designed for students who wish to undertake degree studies across various disciplines in the Social Sciences and humanities. The diversity of the course is tailored to accord the students a wide range of opportunities in the job market. In addition, the coursework is designed to offerStudents with a wide knowledge in the humanities and Social Sciences that is fairly sufficient to expose them to numerous job opportunities. The programme is good for those students who are not yet decided about their future careers and would like a programme that gives them the freedom to flexibly join diverse job ranks, both local and international.

Students of this course are advised to study across various disciplines for the sake of the job market but they are allowed to specialize in any of the following degree programmes: Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies, English and Linguistics, Philosophy, Sociology, Kiswahili, History or Economics. Upon successful completion of the course, graduates will be competent to work in various job ranks at both local and international levels. Graduates of the programme will be prepared to serve as community development officers, political leaders, bankers, human rights activists, administrators, teachers, company executives, trade unionists, writers, University lecturers and Professors among others.

Entry Qualifications
For self sponsored students, at least a mean grade of C+ in KCSE. For Government sponsored students, the minimum cut point which is announced annually applies. The students should in addition have good performance in the following cluster subjects; Subject 1 ENG/KIS, Subject 2 MAT A / MAT B or any GROUP II, Subject 3 any GROUP III, Subject 4 a GROUP II or 2nd GROUP III or any GROUP IV or any GROUP V

Becoming a community development officer
If you can build good relationships with people and you believe in the many advantages of having a strong and successful community, then pursuing this course might be a good choice for you. In addition, you should be willing to develop skills that can help you grow in this field.

Community development officers are innovative people possessing excellent problem solving skills which enable them to develop practical and innovative solutions to the problems faced by their people or the communities they serve. They also have good people skills as strong people skills helps foster healthy and productive relationships with the people they serve and colleagues. Good time management skills are very important in this field to ensure these professionals effectively manage their time and provide adequate service to all of their clients. Like any other profession, good communication skills ensure effective transfer of information from the experts to the community members.

Work environment
Community development officers may work in various environment such offices, academia, field among other environments.

Career opportunities
Depending on one specialization, graduates of this course can find employment in diverse areas including: communication and media industries; education; psychology and counselling; cultural, political and social policy analysis; writing and publishing. Other areas of employment include; Government Agencies, Non Governmental Organizations, Arts and cultural organisations. Graduates can also opt to start their own enterprises such as writing among others.
