What is career guidance?
Career guidance can be described as a process that is designed to assist individuals to make informed career and educational choices. It is very crucial in helping individuals discover their interests, passions, and abilities, as well as the available careers. Individuals who acquire career guidance at the right time can perform well in their academics, make improved career decisions, and have positive progress in career and personal development.

Despite the significant role played by timely career guidance, a significant portion of school-going children across Kenya do not have access to appropriate career guidance. As a result, many of these learners make poor career decisions. The impact of poor career choices (s) on young people is quite serious. Some of these problems include poor learning and academic discipline, a demotivated workforce, Low productivity in organizations from those who feel they are in the wrong careers, and lack of jobs in some careers, making some qualified and skilled people desperate. Besides, people keep changing careers when they cannot handle the demands. All these problems can be avoided by giving young people career advice.
The lack of appropriate career guidance in secondary schools in Kenya is contributed by the lack of adequate career teachers as these teachers are also allotted teaching lessons. As a result, they are usually overwhelmed to balance class work together with the career needs of the learners. Careers guidance resources are also inadequate in many schools. Besides, time allocated to career guidance is very little compared to other co-curricular activities such as the games.
To give proper career guidance for high school students across Kenya regardless of their abilities or geographical locations, there is urgent need for policy changes in our education system. Until then, many students would lack this vital service, which is currently being offered by professional career advisors/ counselors in Kenya, and many learners can’t afford their services.
