What is vocational training?
Vocational training can be described as a form of training that equips learners with skills and knowledge required for a particular kind of a job such as; welding, carpentry, leather work, catering, construction, plumbing, electrical works and metal work among many other kinds of trades. Vocational training in Kenya takes place in centers of learning known as vocational training centers (VTCs) commonly referred to as youth polytechnics, (YPs). There are hundreds of vocational training centers spread across the country in all the forty seven (47) counties. Therefore, wherever you are in this country, there are several VTCs near you both public and private. Vocational training centers offers various vocational courses such as; artisan certificate courses, grade test courses and craft certificate courses among other short courses. There are hundreds of artisan and grade test courses to choose from depending on learner’s career interests. Artisan courses offered within vocational training centers are examined by various bodies such as; the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) and National Industrial Training Authority, (NITA) among others. TVET Institutions in Kenya
Some other vocational courses are offered in other more advanced institutions of learning known as Technical Vocational Education and Training, (TVET) Institutes spread across the country. TVET institutions in Kenya offer various TVET courses such as; artisan certificate courses, craft certificate courses, diploma courses as well as higher diploma courses. Students interested in TVET training can go through their TVET application process through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (Kuccps) for government sponsored students or apply directly in the TVET institution of their choice for self sponsored students. The advantages of technical and vocational education is that it equips young people with a wide range of technical and vocational skills that empowers them to either start their own businesses or get a decent employment thereby participating actively in the development of the economy.
