What are TVET institutions?
TVET which stands for Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions or colleges are postsecondary institutions or colleges that offer TVET courses or programs in Kenya. TVET courses or programs are technical courses that equip the young people with technical and entrepreneurial skills. These skills enable the youth get decent employment or start their own businesses. In Kenya, there two kinds of TVET institutions. The first one is Technical and Vocational Centers (TVCs); these are postsecondary technical schools or colleges that offer technical courses up to diploma level. These courses are mainly artisan, craft and diploma courses. The second category is Vocational Training Centers (VTCs) previously known as village/ youth polytechnics. Vocational Training Centers (VTCs) are technical schools that offer vocational/ technical courses up to craft certificate levels. Courses offered by VTCs are artisan and craft courses. TVET institutions in Kenya are spread across the 47 counties in the country.

Despite their regional accessibility, enrollment in TVET institutions in Kenya has been low. One of the causes of low enrollment is due to the negative image propagated about the TVET sector. This is because, TVET in Kenya has been associated with academic failures which is not the case.  The good news is this; the Kenyan government is working hard to change the negative perceptions of TVET institutions, which have been identified as key centers for producing relevant skills for the development of the local economy and realization of vision 2030. Some of the efforts include TVET infrastructural development and financial support through Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans among the TVET students.  Students who get enrolled in TVET colleges can apply for TVET loan through HELB online portal. Despite these efforts, many students are still not enrolling in TVET institutions.

Therefore there is need to create more awareness on all the options available to students in TVET institutions as well as progression paths available to students and the wider community. This will serve to counter the negative perceptions informed by lack of or limited information on TVET education. Efforts of this kind should start in primary through secondary schools since most of TVET students come from these levels of education.
